Not all trailer sizes will suit your unique needs. Some can be too short while others could be longer than necessary. Getting the right trailer length is important and the following tips will help!

Check State Restrictions

States often have rules about how long a trailer can be. Kansas, for example, has a maximum length of 59 feet and six inches. Be sure to also consider the restrictions for any states that you plan on visiting.

Check the Tow Vehicle Restrictions

Your tow vehicle may not be able to safely or legally handle certain trailer sizes. Look up the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which will be the amount of weight that the vehicle can handle. Remember to factor in the weight of the cargo and any passengers. You don't want to get a trailer that's too long and too heavy for your tow vehicle to haul!

Consider the Cargo

Some items have a fixed length. If you are hauling a kayak, for example, the trailer needs to be at least that long (with a few inches of wiggle room). Don't guestimate this! Take measurements or look up measurements in any owner's manuals.

If you are hauling cargo that's smaller in size or can be situated in different ways, you have more options. For example, storage boxes could be stacked while landscaping materials could be placed in certain sized containers. It's still important to consider the amount of overall space the cargo will take up so you get a trailer that is long enough and wide enough.

Consider the Trailer Storage

Where will you keep your trailer when it is not in use? It needs to go somewhere, after all.

The best place, of course, is somewhere that offers protection from bad weather and potential thieves. Ideally, the trailer will be stored indoors. If you plan on using your garage or a shed, be sure you know the length limitations of that area. You don't want to get a trailer that's too long and prevents the door from closing!

Consider Your Budget

In general, longer trailers will cost more money. After all, the manufacturer needed to buy more materials to create a longer trailer, which means the model will be sold at a higher starting price. If you want to get a more budget-friendly longer trailer, you could always buy a used trailer. These models will be sold at a lower price due to the effects of depreciation.
