Plan Entertainment Options
One challenge of RVing with kids is keeping them entertained, especially during the long hours of a road trip. Bored kids can easily become grumpy kids that start picking fights with siblings, so it's wise to try to head that off as much as possible.
Encourage your kids to bring along some favorite books, movies, music, and toys for the car ride. You can also look into downloading games, apps, and other activities onto devices to help pass the time. For crafty kids, bring along art supplies. You can attach paper for coloring onto a clipboard, for example.
Promote Good Sleep
Make sure the kids all have pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, and anything else they need for a good night's sleep. Check that the temperature inside the RV is not too hot or too cold. Little ones may benefit from a nightlight or keeping the main room lights dim. The RV vacation will go much smoother if everyone, including all the kids, get good sleep.
Maintain a Routine
It's helpful to try to keep up the usual schedule while on an RV vacation. Aim for meals at the same time, a similar bedtime, and so on. The consistency helps keep every family member on the same page and can help the trip go seamlessly.
Pick Kid-Friendly Destinations
Kids will enjoy certain trip destinations more than others. Adults may be quite content to simply sit outside enjoying the quiet, but that's usually not a kid's idea of a thrilling vacation.
Try to find places that offer activities and interests for children. Many RV campgrounds, for example, will offer playgrounds, rec rooms, and other options. See if you can find travel destinations that offer zoos, parks, museums, swimming pools, and other such experiences.
Take Breaks
Remember to take plenty of breaks during a day of adventuring. Keep hikes, tourist attractions, and other activities short to help prevent exhaustion and overstimulation. Remember to set aside time for bathroom stops, snack time, and other needs. Kids, and adults, can also benefit from nap times as a way to recharge for the next several hours of fun!
